January 22, 2009What is a sociopath?
Sociopaths are persons with Antisocial Personality Disorder. These people are characterized to have no regard for the rights of others and have a reckless disregard for safety. They’re also decietful and have a nasty habit of lying–always. Often, these deceptions have the aim of personal profit or pleasure, usually at the expense of another person. They also seem to have no remorse for actions that hurt other people in any way. Contrary to popular belief, sociopaths don’t have to come from broken homes or whatever similar scenario. Sociopaths may come from all walks of life and sypmtoms of their disorder are already present in early childhood. Social forces and dysfunctional environments play a huge part in forming a sociopath’s criminal behavior.
Well known sociopaths are Jeffrey Dahmer, Lizzie Borden, Ted bundy and David Berkowitz. Lizzie Borden took an axe and whacked her mother forty times and her father, forty one. In court, it was conclusive that she was lying due to the inconcistencies of her statements. Ted Bundy, a regular law student by day, becomes a sadistic murderer at night. “People have this look in their eyes that invite you to abuse them”, so he says. These people have been known to have exhibited violent tendencies and deceitfulness in their childhood.
David Berkowitz was a child of above average intelligence, but he lost his want of learning at an early age, instead he edveloped a crazy love of fire which eventually led to his being a murderer and an arsonist.
Ted Bundy had trouble learning social dynamics when he was in his teens, saying that: “I don’t know how these things tick. Why do people want to make friends?”. In his childhood, his aunt remembered one incident where she woke up with a whole stack of kitchen knives lying in the bed she was sleeping in. Beside her was little ted bundy.
(Seems pretty scary eh? Well, when I was a kid, I used to bury our pet kittens alive. If I’m not outside, I drown them.)
What is the problem?
(ok, what’s weird is that while I was typing this post, I was listening to Rihanna’s “unfaithful”. It has the word, murderer in it. Even a lover can be a murderer. So be careful). Clearly, the problem here is that sociopaths are an established danger to society. Over 5,000 murders have been attributed to sociopaths after 9/11, twice as much as the casualties caused by the war on terror. There have been several attempts to resolve this problem, the one which intrigued me so much though was Britain’s passing of a mental health bill which had a provision that allowed for the detainment of a person on the grounds that he is mentally ill and is presumed to be a danger to society.
Here’s a clear-cut scenario: state sets up mental health facilities and programs to find out who are these people who have antisocial personality disorder. That should include standardized tests, psychoanalytical therapies and background checks of suspects. A is a suspected sociopath, he takes the tests and his background checks prove to be consistent to the profile of a sociopath. He is thereby detained. Does he really deserve that? He hasn’t done anything wrong yet, no murder, no crime, no nothing.
A controversial one indeed, as it goes against Human Rights. Namely a person’s rights to a fair trial, against arbitrary detention (presuming that this sort of detainment is arbitrary in nature), and more improtantly, the right to liberty and security and respect for private and family life. The wording of the law seems to simplify and homogenize people with mental health disorders to have tendencies to kill. Instead of making things easier for people with mental illnesses, this proposal seems to have exacerbated their image as helpless loons that have no hope of being cured. Technically, a sociopath can no longer be “cured” of his disorder. This is because in the psychoanalytical treatment of mentally ailing patients, it is required that a patient admit that he has a problem and he is truly willing to be cured of it. A sociopath is prone to lying and ever we are going to try to cure him, he’d probably fake it, right? So in a nutshell, A will have to spend his days in some detaining facility where he can’t harm others but himself. How about his family/ families (since sociopaths have a tendency to have multiple partners). Well, at least we keep them safe from harming others right?
Alas, a tangled web we weave: Public safety vs. Human Rights
So the solution seems to be flawed and against human rights. We have to ask ourselves now: Are we assured that is this proposal flies, will we really be safe from harm? What image would this send? Is this really what we want? Well, considering the first question, we can’t still be TOTALLY sure that we’d be safe from harm. There are other murderers out there who are completely sane, and their cause to kill must be fueled by their needs or some other non-mentally related condition. The answer to the second question is simple: any state that applies this proposal would be condemned by the international community. There would be a standardized way of thinking, if I’ll go farfetched. How about the weird and the strange, does this mean that they should be condemned on the grounds that individually they’re just like that (how about me?)? Lastly, do we really want this? We want public safety but let’s not go to the extent of compromising other’s people’s rights.
The right solution to this problem is the introduction of healthy family values to children at an early age. This means that there should be lots of tender, loving care given to these chidren and the right type of action when they exhibit symptoms of Antisocial Personality Disorder. In other words: Prevention is better than cure.
(Now, that said, I should consider what should be done with womanizers, and people who take advantage.)
