Taepodongs.. Again.
April 6, 2009North Korea’s defiance- Enough
It’s enough that North Korea can’t feed its own people, has arbitrarily (though allegedly) abducted journalists and people from Japan and other states and continues to shy away from the family of nations, but when it defies the stipulations of the six-party talks it’s entered into, I say, get the lead out people. There’s no way NoKor’s going to live up to its promises.
Let’s look at what happened April 5, 2009, 11:00 AM, despite the six-party talks it has entered into which orders that it (NoKor) would halt its nuclear development program, North Korea launches a rocket over Japan that falls somewhere in its nearby sea. North Korea says it’s just a space exploration program, well, everyone knows that’s not true. In fact, why would any country push for a space exploration program when it can’t even feed its own people? What’s it going to do? Go to the moon and plant space potatoes? Maybe Kim Jong Il just wants a piece of some space rock and build a home there, or maybe the rocket’s purpose is to glorify him more by making it rain food or candy from the sky when it blows up in the sky, thus turning him into some kind of candy god.
Under the maxim, pacta sunta servanta, all members of the family of nations must adhere to the treaties they have readily entered into. To not be able to serve it should spell dire consequences. Well, consequently, North Korea doesn’t want to be a member of the family of nations and the hell it cares about being sanctioned and what-not. North Korea has proven itself unworthy of trust and quite frankly, I think we should stop wasting time and drop the hammer of indiscriminate justice on it.
Mixed reactions
Japan has installed anti-missile defense systems on localities where there are potential key targets. I think in an effort to boost his political stand, Taro Aso did this so that he could show the Japanese people that he is capable of responding in such a manner that tells the people: “See? I’m protecting you with our little rockets. Love me.” I think it’s an okay measure, but I think Japan could’ve done better. It just showed North Korea that it is intimidated, that it is scared of what North Korea can do. Why is that bad? Because it just gave away the capabilities of Japan to respond to such an action. Thus, North Korea can further make adjustments to battle strategy when the time comes that it must face Japan in war. Consider this, in the sport of boxing, it could be considered a fake, its purpose was to measure the response of the opponent, to know which arm he would use to counter attack. Bad move Japan, unless you have Mobile suit gundams and the all-powerful Voltes V in your arsenal, I think you just gave away your position- well, at least some of it.
President Barrack Obama says that North Korea’s defiance is condemnable. “..words in treaties must mean something..” so he says in a press conference somewhere in Prague, or wherever. “North Korea must know that progress and development does not lie in the power of weapons…” So true. Couldn’t have said it better myself. He did use the situation to forward one of his promises- a nuclear disarmament campaign which he thinks is possible. Ambitious, true enough, since he said that such a feat requires great time and effort and admitted that it may not be able to be successful in his lifetime. Some disregarded it as crazy and well, impossible, he told them that it’s high time that they accept change. It’s like how the ninja system in the Naruto manga series works– you kill my friend, I kill yours—You have a nuclear bomb, I should have one too, for the sake of defense. Quite frankly, it’s pretty impossible and a lot of people must’ve told Barrack to give up that campaign and go for a rocket that rains down candy from the sky when it explodes. Well, in a nutshell, he must’ve told them to give up thinking that he’ll give up on the idea. I think it’s something worth trying though. It’s pretty tiring to have one nuclear development program sprout in some rogue state every once in a while (i.e. Iran, Libya, Cuba, North Korea, etc.).
Okay, what to do with North Korea?
North Korea, as I’ve said earlier, has proven itself unworthy of trust and must therefore suffer the consequences of its actions. I think it’s time that the world takes up arms against it and free its people from the slavering mindset Kim Jong Il has imposed against them. Let’s take a look at the social status there: 1) the living conditions in North Korea are poor and nothing sustains its people, there’s no food, no education and 2) Kim Jong Il’s practically a god there, if he wants a whole parade on his birthday, he’s going to get it, if he wants candy to fall from the sky at his whim, then he’ll set up a “space exploration program” to get it.
We’ve tried everything, from pressures to sanctions and even its big brother, china, wasn’t able to convince it to stop. I think the old fashioned way of dealing with North Korea is something that’s worth trying. A good spanking would help since a sermon isn’t really doing anything.
Previous Comments
Cool. Aegis missile systems. Anyway:
1) Kim Jong Il isn’t rational remember? If we’re going to look at it at another angle, Kim Jong Il was like toying with Japan’s response system, knowing that Japan can’t strike back because of Big Brother China and the UN.
2) Well, maybe not this time, but if NoKor continues to be like that, I don’t think talking with it would do any good. Pretty soon, it’ll be too late for a tactical response because, already a missile has been launched against some country.
thanks for the comment.
So all your arguments rests on the assumption that Kim is stupid. I don’t think he is, having outsmarted the Americans many times.
1. So what could have been Japan’s best response then?
2. Again, an invasion is difficult to do, whether now or in the immediate future. It would only make the North launch a missile with nuke warhead. Besides, Kim isn’t stupid enough to launch a nuke. He is doing the launch to gain attention so he could get concession, not to destroy a country. Besides, if Kim destroys a city, you will be sure that the UN and China would even be the first to approve an attck on Nokor.
Posted by J at April 6, 2009, 6:20 pmGood point.
Posted by carlo at April 6, 2009, 9:01 pmYup, Kim Jong Il ain’t stupid, Madeleine Albright got a taste of it during Pres. Clinton’s term. Anyway, Carlo what you’re asking is tantamount to outright WAR. Besides, Kim is probably doing a lot of things with that rocket & nuke test: 1. to get Obama’s attention ( Obama’s attention is probably fixated on the US economy); 2. To show that he is still strong and defiant ( he suffered from stroke and he’s old), probably to get the Nokor people’s admiration and; 3. to show to Kim Jong Un (his chosen successor how daddy conducts business.

Nice post, Carlo. I have two comments.
1. I think Japan had done too much in flexing its muscle. I don’t know how it would tactically be disadvantageous. The Aegis missile system were deployed through destroyers throughout the Sea of Japan and in different locations. And the system could have shot down any debris that would fall on Japanese land. If that wasn’t a show of force that would deter the rational man within Kim Jong-il, I don’t know what would. In fact, I think it was a bit of an overkill, designed to scare not just North Korea but the people.
2. I’m not sure invading North Korea is a good idea. True, a full scale invasion could be preceded by a surgical airstrike on the nuclear reactors and launch pads. But such is too risky. If the strike misses even one missile/bomb, the lunatics in Pyongyang could deliver it to Seoul or Tokyo, leaving millions dead. And during the invasion itself, the corrupt North Korean officials could steal the materials and sell them to terrorist (like how the Ukrainians and Russians did during the fall of the USSR). Finally, invasion would most likely be followed by reunification of the two Koreas, which isn’t very wise now. The population of North Korea who are not just unemployed but unskilled as well would overwhelm the South Korean economy. In light of the present economic crisis, this is a disaster that could spill over the whole world.
