In April 3 and 4, the Lyceum Debate Society went to Kaname-chan’s place in Taysan, Batangas for a summer getaway which we readily called a “leadership training program”. Incidentally, I learned a lot of things, 1) I learned the essentials of loving myself, 2) I learned that there are other people who are way more miserable than me and 3)na guwapo pala ako if I was whiter, or if I had a more plain complexion— to hell with the 3rd one.
Insecurtity and low self-esteem are one of the most daunting problems young people face today, well, in particular, me (This is my blog.) In response to such problems, I was able to gain some insight as to how it happens and why, and the possible solutions to it. Acceptance is a vital part of anyone’s life, in certain cases, people really need it. I’m writing in terms of emotional acceptance, where people accept you for who you are and not for what you have, etc.
Without acceptance, there is the prevalence of low self-esteem, self-pity and eventually, if things don’t improve and depending on the environment the individual faces, apathy and selfishness may occur. However, the most important kind of acceptance is the acceptance of oneself, individually. The acceptance of oneself will eventually lead to the love of self and eventually to a more positive outlook in life.
The fruits of self-love are 1) a balanced self esteem, 2) confidence in interaction with others, 3) healthy relationships, 4) awareness of others’ individual plights and 5) a better understanding of other people’s feelings.
How do we love ourselves? Simple:
1) Feel proud about yourself, know what you can do- this is essential in the molding of a character. Once a person feels proud about himself, and once he knows what he is capable of, he may recourse to doing better than the usual. This sort of drive is good as it makes the person a better person than before.
2) Respect the opinions of others about you- If you think they’re wrong about what they think about you, then it’s only right that you defend yourself, if successful, then it’s fine, if not, hell you don’t exist to please ‘em. It’s your life, live it, love it, but don’t impede on other people’s rights. If you think they’re kind of right and that you think you should improve in a certain sphere, analyze, get people’s opinions, but be careful not to conform too much. Just weigh some facts and what-not.
3) Attract positive energy- the law of attraction states that is you keep thinking positively about something, it would gather enough cosmic energy to make it happen (i.e. if you want to have a hot date, you’ll get one). Well, it’s not proven scientifically yet, but my message here is to think positively and to adapt reality, not negativity in certain perspectives in life and what-not.
3.1) Always look at all the angles of a situation and think of an optimized reaction or solution in which all parties may benefit from it. Not only will you feed yourself more with positive energy, you’ll gain a new friend.
3.2) Stop comparing yourself to others. This is usually the source of all insecurities. Trust me, I know. I f you think that guy’s smarter, way more handsome, better than you in anyway, well the hell you should care. All the more reason to push you to becoming a better person and letting the girl know: “you should’ve picked me instead of him”. Besides, you know you’re better in DOTA, you really are way more handsome and that you can kick his ass in basketball in any lifetime.
4) Recognize the existence of God, His plan for your existence and thank Him for everything. In the trip, I learned that I wasn’t as faithful as I was before. So what I did was I whispered to myself that I’ll be more of a believer than a skeptic next time.
