The Springtime of Youth
April 8, 2009As I was walking the street to buy some Kalabasa and Sitaw for the Pakbet I was going to cook for dinner, I can’t help but notice a group of youngsters hanging around some of the PC shops, merrily cursing their way to a double or triple kill. After haggling with the tindera, I continued on, and I saw a bunch of teenagers slouching around in what must’ve been their friend’s place, idly chatting, and drinking like there was no tomorrow. Perhaps, there really is, for them, that is. It’s sad that not all Filipino youth are proactive, quite frankly, however, I think this virus known as apathy and indifference is being held at bay now and I think the spirit of nationalism is being revived.
Last Month, I won the Kabataang pangarap ni Rizal’s Oratory contest whose theme is consistent with how the youth is the cornerstone of change in the Philippines. Originally, I wasn’t supposed to be in the contest, I just wanted to support a fellow debater, who convinced me to join later on. They gave me about 15 minutes to work on a speech that I should’ve worked on for 3 weeks and I came up with this:
“Change has come to America. Good for them.
In the Philippines, we cannot help but notice the decay that has been inflicted upon the Filipino youth. A decay known as apathy and indifference. This decay is seen in the different youth cultures that have been occurring, the materialistic gangsters, the indifferent Goths, the decadent emo movements. Also, we see that the Filipino youth have become to feel shame for Filipino products and what-not. All of these are indications that the Filipino youth have lost their identity as an idealistic person. Where is the juan who wanted to be educated to the par of excellence? Where is the juan that wanted to prove his country’s worth to the world? Where is the juan that once held the spirit of nationalism in his heart and saw great pride in his country? Is he dead?
Sadly, we see an identity crisis in our youth, if not the total death of their once inherent nationalism. They say it’s hopeless; one leader after another brings nothing more but crisis due to their corruption and warped version of politics. I say, no, so long as my heart continues to nourish my veins with true Filipino blood, I will not succumb to your twisted vision of hopelessness. So long the flame of nationalism continues to burn in my heart, and in those who have it in them, our identity as the Filipino youth shall not perish! For so long has apathy, hopelessness, indifference and colonial mentality kept us slaves to their will.
I hereby address this challenge to everyone in my generation. Let us shatter this vicious cycle and revive the juan who was nationalistic. Let us recognize the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, who gave their lives to ensure our freedom. Let us keep them alive in our hearts and inherit their will of fire. One that, I say, should never be extinguished so long as we, the Filipino youth who care, live. As for me, I shall nurture my will of fire and make sure, that I spread its warmth.”
Quite frankly, I thought I could’ve done better.
It’s not the best speech in the world, but I can tell you that I’ve outed my ill feelings about the youth’s apathy towards the condition of the Philippines. It’s a relief that I’ve been hearing a lot about how the other sector of the youth still want to preserve national pride such as the young people who admire Many Pacqiao’s boxing, those who make songs that inspire nationalism like Francis M. and Bamboo. I’m also proud to be part of a certain community that’s proactive in the sense that it’s totally aware f what’s happening—the debate community.
