What’s in your head, zombie?
April 9, 2009There have been several versions of the apocalypse that have been presented in the media, others factual, like the climate change that has been taking place in the whole world, others based on human-influenced factors, like nuclear war and the existence of terrorism. I’ve always been a fan of survival horror and yes, I guess I’ve been watching a little too much zombie flicks like Night of the Living dead, Dawn of the dead, I am Legend and the Resident evil Trilogy, I’ve been playing a little too much Left 4 dead and I’ve probably spent so much of my time reflecting on the curves and mindsets of the scantily clad women of the Resident Evil series. But I guess what’s so scary about this type of apocalypse is its plausibility. I’m not saying climate change isn’t plausible, and nuclear war, I’m saying, it’s something that’s just plain scary because we’d all be dying some gruesome death courtesy of our once living human relatives. After reading this post, you’d probably tell me: Get a Life.
Here’s how I think it would happen:
As we’ve seen in the movies and as we hear in games’ stories, a sort of virus has evolved or is created by some corporation that immediately kills its host and implants upon it an instinct to kill the nearest living thing, probably as some food source. Imagine how the rabies virus should evolve or is enhanced. The ordinary rabies virus can turn a once loyal family pet, into a bloodthirsty, violent beast. Imagine what an enhanced form of rabies virus can do if it were able to do the same with humans. To make matters worse, if it was created by human hands, this sort of thing can be sold to terrorists and there’s obviously nothing to stopthem, unless of course, we give in to what they want.
The scenario
After say, 2 weeks or infection, depending on the kind of virus that’s unleashed against humanity, a whole city may get infected. Eventually, in months’ time, the world would’ve been infected and perhaps the last remaining denizens of humankind would find themselves in some shelter away from the infected zones. In this time, money wouldn’t matter, the trade and political relations between nations, all shattered. By this time, all forms of communication would’ve been cut or dismantled, all businesses gone. Civilization as we know it crashes and we’re back in the dark ages. Urban cities laid to waste as its military forces hold off the infected in a desperate attempt to rescue some remaining survivors, some of them perhaps immune, provided that the virus has gone airborne, others, just plain lucky that they didn’t get bitten or scratched by these horrible things. What a cruel world that would be, now would it?
As you sit down in that transport where other people like you are not infected you wonder about your loved ones: “Are they ok?” “Are they still alive?” “I wonder what happens to Oprah?”. All these questions (okay, except the third one), cannot perhaps debunk the last question you have in your mind, would everything go back to normal? Normally, we’d look at the infected as animals that have taken over human form without remorse, without emotion, just killing to live. Why are we to blame them? In fact, who is to blame?
If we’re going to look at reality, there have been several studies abut germs and viruses that may be used as a form of weapon. Let’s look at the Anthrax Virus and what-not that has been used in World War II and by terrorists in the Middle East in the Persian Gulf War. In the case of evolved viruses, let’s take a look at the Ebola virus that came from primates in Africa. The unfortunate soul who gets this virus will soon find himself dying in a pool of his infected blood, slowly withering away. It’s a gruesome way to die.
But let’s take a deeper perspective
Are we not zombies already? Are we not infected by advertisements, media, and materialism? In fact, the 1980s classic Dawn of the Dead featured a bunch of survivors trapped and holding on for their dear lives in some mall. I don’t know, but I think the writer of the movie thought it was some sort of parallelism as to how people flock to the malls to get their hands on the niftiest technology and the latest trendy product. I guess the writer of the movie was trying to ask the viewers this simple question:
“You exist, but are you living?”
If you ask me, it’s the perfect analogy for a zombie apocalypse. We’ve been so into technology that we’ve totally missed out on the hard way that taught our parents to be industrious. We’ve been so caught up with money and greed that some politicians resort to corruption to assure their family’s well-being, totally unconcerned of others’. We’ve been so into office and work that we forgot that staying at home and spending quality time with loved ones is a vital part of our existence.
In the ending of a favorite classic, Night of the living dead, the scene portrays normal human survivors, a squad of them, highly armed, rounding up the remaining zombies and toying with them, others burning the infected. This made the protagonist wonder, who are the real monsters?
Oh well, at least I got to write something.
