April 9, 2009Yesterday, April 8, 2009, at around 7.30 AM, a bunch of Somali pirates hijacked a Danish owned ship that was bringing a hefty bunch of humanitarian aid. The ship known as Maersk Arkansas was boarded by said pirates as it was passing the horn of Africa. In the boarding, one of the crew members took down one of the pirates whilst the pirates took hostage the captain of their crew. In an attempt to negotiate, the crew wanted to trade their captive for their captain. They kept their end of the bargain, but the Somali pirates don’t seem to want to keep theirs.

There have been 66 attacks on some traveling ships in 2006 alone and these attacks seem to not stop. The current solution to this problem is the negotiation with these pirates in the hopes that they’ll be releasing some of their 250 captives in exchange with monetary aid and what-not. Obviously, this isn’t working and it’s fundamentally unacceptable to negotiate with what the International Community has deemed hostilis humanis generis—the enemy of mankind.
Let’s look at the reason why they’re called enemies of mankind: 1) They don’t owe allegiance to any country or state, 2) they pillage and rob innocent ships that they lay their eyes on, provided that these ships are considerably unprotected and 3) they’re basically pirates, they don’t have any cause to fight for, unlike terrorists who claim to have a worthy cause. They loot and plunder any ship they lay their wretched eyes on and they don’t live up to promises made with other states. They’re probably working for some warlord in his twisted goal of taking over some weird land in Africa.
What’s being done?
Time and again, some state gives in to the ransoms these pirates offer for the release of one of its captives. There have also been convoys that are sent to protect these merchant ships whenever they’re supposed to pass these deadly areas in the horn of Africa. Recently however, China and Japan has sent destroyers and other warships to scare the pirates away, unfortunately, it didn’t work and for some reason, these naval forces withdrew probably to attend to some other pirate problem, or perhaps realizing that there’s nothing in it for them if they continue staying there—save for a few fishes and a glimpse of a few whales, probably.
What needs to be done?
I say, let any naval force capable of dealing with these pirates apprehend them. Hunt the pirates down and let them know that the likes of them are not welcome in the high seas. I guess this should be done in coordination with the United Nations Security Council, which, I think, should be competent enough to determine what naval force is good enough to take the pirates down. There’s always the possibility of overkill if this is to happen, but I think it’s a worthy deterrent. Again, someone would say that the deterrent argument is purely a fallacy since these pirates operate on the mindset that they won’t get caught. Here’s the thing, we’re going to make them now that they’ll get caught, that the likes of them do not belong in the high seas and that we have the technology to search and apprehend them. What do they have? A bunch of machine guns mounted on their tiny little motorboats, probably a net and a few spears and jungle knives. But I doubt this kind of armament. Weak as they may look like, I’m thinking these pirates are very resourceful and are able to launch coordinated attacks against any force that’s going to be in their way. So? Crush them with a Nimitz class Aircraft Carriers; I doubt they have any anti-air defense systems. Bring them down with state-of-the-art submarines. Not only would this kind of armed force send a message of fear and eventually should it turn to be a deterrence, the coordination of the countries involved would create an impression how powerful a joint effort of countries would be against an international threat.
